BIOGRAPHY
Anne-Charlotte Moulard is a visual artist and filmmaker whose work explores the boundaries between photography, cinema and documentary. Through long-term projects, she examines how we perceive reality, weaving together memory, fiction and lived experience.
Her images often emerge from territories undergoing change, taking the form of visual narratives in which portraiture plays a central role. Rather than simply depicting her subjects, she seeks to bring characters to life. Staging, light, locations and objects become elements of a narrative that leaves viewers free to imagine what came before and what comes after.
Educated in Paris and London (Penninghen, Gobelins, Central Saint Martins and ENS Louis-Lumière), she has been developing her own artistic practice for nearly twenty years, alongside projects for brands and cultural institutions.
Her work has received several awards and has been presented at festivals and institutions in France and internationally. Her project Stella, developed over nearly twenty years, is currently being exhibited at Les Rencontres de la Photographie in Arles and will be published as a monograph by Four Eyes in autumn 2026.
ARTIST STATEMENT
How do people become who they are through the places they inhabit, and how can images preserve the invisible connections between people, places and time?
Anne-Charlotte Moulard develops a body of work at the intersection of photography and cinema, in which the still image often serves as the starting point for a narrative that film extends by shifting perspectives. She explores how places shape people, influence their paths through life and inform their memories.
Working across documentary, fiction, portraiture and personal narrative, she photographs and films people rooted in a particular place. Locations are never mere backdrops: they hold stories, dreams, absences and memories. Rather than capturing the decisive moment, she stages memory, moving between lived experience and reconstructed recollection. Her images thus become a way of holding on to time, allowing intimate stories and collective memory to coexist.
Northern France lies at the heart of her practice. She explores its poetry, inhabited landscapes and everyday mythologies to construct a visual narrative rooted in the region yet open to universal themes. Through staged portraits, family histories and places undergoing change, she seeks to bring forth a contemporary mythology of her region.
Following in the footsteps of American photographers who have shaped the image of their own territories, she seeks to tell the stories of landscapes where families, gestures and places become characters in a collective history. Here, too, vast horizons and pioneer narratives exist, while the notion of the ‘right to the horizon’ serves as a reminder of the need to preserve these landscapes.
